Rumi

Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Balkhī or simply Rumi was a 13th century persian mystic, poet and theologian.
Rumi’s importance is considered to transcend national and ethnic borders. His poems have been widely translated into many of the world’s languages and transposed into various formats. In 2007, he was described as the “most popular poet in America.”
Rumi’s works are written in Persian and his Mathnawi remains one of the purest literary glories of Persia, and one of the crowning glories of the Persian language.
Rumi is one of the person who keeps me inspiring through his quotes and poems.
and i think he can inspire you too,so i am posting some of his quotes here which are my favorites.

Why should I seek? I am the same as
He. His essence speaks through me.
I have been looking for myself!

“Everything in the universe is within you. Ask all from yourself.”

“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.”

Live where you fear to live.
Destroy your reputation.
Be notorious.”

“Where there is ruin, there is hope for a treasure.”

“Let yourself be drawn by the stronger pull of that which you truly love.”

“Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.”

“We come spinning out of nothingness, scattering stars like dust.”

“Travel brings power and love back into your life.”

“Two there are who are never satisfied — the lover of the world and the lover of knowledge.”

“Suffering is a gift. In it is hidden mercy.

“Be like melting snow — wash yourself of yourself.”

“You try to be faithful
And sometimes you’re cruel.
You are mine. Then, you leave.
Without you, I can’t cope.

And when you take the lead,
I become your footstep.
Your absence leaves a void.
Without you, I can’t cope.

You have disturbed my sleep,
You have wrecked my image.
You have set me apart.
Without you, I can’t cope.”

“I know you’re tired but come, this is the way.”

“And you? When will you begin that long journey into yourself?”

“In Silence there is eloquence. Stop weaving and see how the pattern improves.”

“Inside you there’s an artist you don’t know about… say yes quickly, if you know, if you’ve known it from before the beginning of the universe.”

“Set your life on fire. Seek those who fan your flames”

“Only from the heart can you touch the sky.”

“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.”

“Christian, Jew, Muslim, shaman, Zoroastrian, stone, ground, mountain, river, each has a secret way of being with the mystery, unique and not to be judged”

“They say there is a doorway from heart to heart, but what is the use of a door when there are no walls?”

“The moon stays bright when it doesn’t avoid the night….”
“Study me as much as you like, you will not know me, for I differ in a hundred ways from what you see me to be. Put yourself behind my eyes and see me as I see myself, for I have chosen to dwell in a place you cannot see.”

“Not only the thirsty seek the water, the water as well seeks the thirsty.”

do not let them cast a shadow
over the moon of your heart.
Let go of thinking.”

the blows are not against the rug,
but against the dust in it.”

“You were born with potential.
You were born with goodness and trust. You were born with ideals and dreams. You were born with greatness.
You were born with wings.
You are not meant for crawling, so don’t.
You have wings.
Learn to use them and fly.”

“Keep walking, though there’s no place to get to.
Don’t try to see through the distances.
That’s not for human beings. Move within,
But don’t move the way fear makes you move.”

“I am your moon and your moonlight too
I am your flower garden and your water too
I have come all this way, eager for you
Without shoes or shawl
I want you to laugh
To kill all your worries
To love you
To nourish you.

Rumi was certainly “ahead” of his time as anyone is in a world that insists on divisiveness and distinction, on the importance of asserting oneself.

Hello Mountain of Joy. Learning Persian language is relatively easy. The grammar isn’t complex and the patterns are easy to grasp. I myself am trying to “brush up” on my own language skills. I’m not yet a fluent speaker yet I’d love to be one–soon, once I get to really devote my time on this. It’ll be a joy to read works in their original wording (no matter how tedious that may be). 🙂

One of my goals this summer is to read up on Rumi, as well as to familiarize myself with other Persian literature and philosophy. I’ve been to Iran for quite a couple of times and really, Persian heritage is so rich with these thinkers. I only hope I get to dip myself with more of these, and eventually find more peace in my life. Thanks for this post. Carry on with your journey.

I love Rumi – it is amazing that his words are as beautiful in English as they are in their original Farsi. I love this one: “Be like melting snow — wash yourself of yourself.” Thank you for compiling these! Very inspiring post – much food for thought.
